Stain Removal Tips for "Dry Clean Only" garments and fabrics:
STAINS HAPPEN… and when they do, make sure to get your valuable garments to American Drycleaners
as fast as possible - and ALWAYS point out where the stains are, and tell us what you think they came from.
Until you can get here, try these tips using readily available household solutions!
grease (butter, oil, mayo) - use and oil solvent, then dab with cool water; dry flat.
fruits & vegetables (including juices & jams) - start with denatured alcohol,
then use white vinegar to remove any remaining color.
red wine - use denatured alcohol - dab with vinegar to remove remaining color.
Dab with cold water - dry flat.
tea - dab with lemon juice to remove color. For sugar, dab with water. For milk,
follow up wtih an oil solvent.
wax or gum - use ice to freeze, or place item in the freezer. Scrape or crack off
as much as you can, then use oil solvent or mineral spirits to remove residue.
sauces (tomato, ketchup, barbecue) - scrape off excess. Use an oil solvent for
grease, then dab with vinegar to remove color. Dab with cold water - dry flat.
oily salad dressing - use an oil solvent for grease, then dab with vinegar
for color.
ballpoint ink - rub glycerine into stain. Let stand for 15-20 minutes.
Use detergent and water sparingly. Dab with cold water. Dry flat.
proteins (blood, egg, grass) - use dishwashing detergent, dab with cool water,
and blot out excess moisture; dry flat.
lipstick - use an oil solvent to remove grease. Dab with white vinegar to remove
color. Dab with cold water - dry flat.
white wine - dab with cold water only, and point out the stain area to the
American Drycleaners staff, even if it is no longer visible.
coffee - dab with vinegar to remove color. For sugar or syrups, flush with water.
For milk and cream, follow up with an oil solvent.
chocolate - start with an oil solvent for grease, then dab with vinegar to remove
color. Dab with cold water - dry flat.
mustards - try dabbing with vinegar.
soy sauce - use cold water and dishwashing detergent sparingly, then dab
with vinegar to remove color.
felt-tip ink -rub glycerine into stain. Let stand for 15-20 minutes. Then, using
an eyedropper, apply denatured alcohol. Dab with cold water. Dry flat.
